A little help hearing when a note is in tune. Practice slow notes and scales, check what you hear, and listen back to your progress.
The Fifth String is a practice companion between lessons. Start with a short, simple exercise and let your ears lead.

Play a slow note and see whether it sits below, above, or close to your chosen reference. Listen first, then check the pitch palette.
Choose your scale and range. Start at your own pace, then add a steady tempo when the notes feel familiar.
Record a short phrase, replay individual notes, and use the pitch summary to choose one thing to work on next.
Review how your recorded loudness rises and falls. Try a steady sound, a crescendo, or a gentle swell with the same microphone position.
Keep reviews in History, export a backup, and return to an exercise later. On phones, the app requests that the screen stays awake while recording; browser and battery settings can affect this.
Vibrato practice shows speed, width, and regularity. Experimental Tone Lab lets you compare two recordings and explore color, consistency, and texture. These measurements are not teacher-validated quality grades.
Adjust the tuning reference with your teacher, use a drone, or import a simple single-part MusicXML exercise. Guided examples demonstrate each mode; the separately labelled real violin example is a concert recording.
Know what the feedback means
This early-access app works best with slow, single notes in a quiet room. Fast passages, double stops, accompaniment, and note tails can confuse pitch detection. A colored tile is an observation, not a verdict on your playing.
Intonation depends on the musical context and selected reference. Dynamics show relative recorded loudness, not calibrated piano or forte. Tone measurements also depend on your microphone, room, and instrument.
Use the feedback to guide a listening experiment and bring questions to your teacher. The app cannot assess posture, bow hold, or physical comfort.
Practice audio is analyzed in your browser. History keeps up to 30 reviews with available audio on this browser; there is no automatic cloud sync. Export a backup before clearing site data, changing browsers, or moving to a new domain.
Issue reports and replies are public. If you choose to attach a recording, it is uploaded to our Cloudflare storage. Attachments are private to moderators unless you explicitly share them publicly; optional contact email is private to moderators.
Website hosting receives normal requests. Abuse limits use network-derived identifiers. Avoid personal information in public reports and only attach recordings you intend to share.
